to increase a number by 9% multiply it by \(1.09\) you do not know what the original salary was, but whatever it was if you multiply it by \(1.09\) you get 102,000 so write \[1.09x=102,00\] and solve for \(x\) via \[x=102,000\div 1.09\] use a calculator
