Bio Homework Help Please? :)? This is all True or False. Thanks! :) 1. When a cell is put into an isotonic solution, individual water molecules cannot move back and forth across the cell membrane. 2.When a cell is put into a hypertonic solution, there is a net movement of water molecules across the cell membrane into the cell. 3.When a cell is put into a hypotonic solution, there is a net movement of water molecules across the cell membrane out of the cell 4.The movement of any solvent across a semi-permeable membrane is called osmosis.
1)truee as isotonic means both the surface is having same concentration 2)false as here they said cell in put into hypertonic solution means cell is hypotonic and water always move from hypo to hyper mean this statement will be right if they say water is moving from cell to solution 3)true for reason i already told in 2nd option 4)false osmosis is told only with the respect of water molecules as in osmosis water molecule always move from high concentration to low concentration.
I disagree with Heena's answer to the first question: there is no net movement of water molecules across the mebrane put that's not the same as saying individual molecules can't move across, so the first one is false. When the cell is put into a hypertonic medium it will lose water across the membrane so 2 is false too. 3 is wrong too: it's just the opposite case to the question above. 4 is true - osmosis applies to any solvent; it's most likely to be water in Biology but not necessarily.
@ebaxter01 i dont think my ans is wrong as i also said 1ans is truee as in the satatement they said no moment :/ coming to 3 i said same reason as i explained the mechnaism so i m kinda lazy to type the mechanism again so sorry u have no right to say that my answers are wrong :/
I agree with ebaxter on number one. The question is about whether individual water molecules can move back and forth across the membrane when the solutions on either side are isotonic. They certainly can - the membrane is certainly still permeable to water molecules. And they certainly still diffuse back and forth across it through random Brownian motion. It is just that water molecules go across it in different directions at the same rate, so the total concentration of water molecules on both sides of the membrane stay the same.
