What is the correct way of addressing a married couple in written correspondence? I familiar with the traditional way, but many rules like these have changed since I was in school--and I'm not old, either!!!

Still mr and mrs.
For example, take John and Mary Smith. Generally they would be addressed as an aggregate as "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith", unless you are addressing them specifically individually.
Mr. Mrs. Sir Madam
I'd say it depends on whether or not you wish to offend the woman in question. Many married women don't change their names. Use Mr. John smith and Mrs. Mary Smith. many women would take offense to having their name omitted - it's just a matter of common courtesy and awareness of current etiquette, in my mind.
