High levels of nationalism. Also, all the countries in Europe had a military culture for generations before WW1. Every man had served, or else he wasn't a man. This high level of nationalism caused tension between states. Competing for resources (colonies etc.) and the actual event that caused WW1 was the murder by a serb of the crown-prince of Austria-Hungary empire. War between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, But they had alliances with other natinos, Germany, Russia, France, England, Beligum. So it was a world war.
