Was columbus Jewish or Christian?

We were discussing it in class and someone said that he read that Columbus was Jewish but he hid it by pretending to be Christian so that the spanish could sponsor their voyages.....

I would think that he was Christian since Spain was a Christian country at the time. Not 100% sure.

I would think he is not jewish because he came from Portugal. Not much Jews there?
