I need to show the work and I'm still not sure how too.  I can do this on a calculator just haven't been able to by writting it out.  The answer is 24.  How did they get that?

like 20x20= 400 and then keep going till you get to 24

You need to factorise by repeatedly dividing by the smallest numbers possible.$$\frac{576}{2}=288$$$$\frac{288}{4}=72$$
You can then break 576 down into 2 *4 * 4 * 2 * 3 * 3
then by grouping you find that 576 = (2 * 4 * 3)^2 = 24^2
