steps: get rid of the coefficient in front of x^2 -> x^2 - 6x + 7 = 0 divide the coefficient of x by 2 - > -6/2 = -3 then put that in parenthesis with x and square it. - > (x-3)^2 then square that -3 and put it on the other side of the equation. -> (x-3)^2 + 7 = 9 then solve for x
