How did the North benefit from slavery although many Northerners opposed it? Answer The federal government taxed slave wages heavily, which enriched the country. Many slaves worked in factories that made industrial goods such as iron and cloth. Helping fugitive slaves escape to the North and to Canada was a profitable business. Slavery kept the cost of raw materials from the South low so that the North had access to cheap cotton.
