Use your imagination to think of other possible solutions to the Great Depression other than the New Deal. Pick two possible solutions and say what their advantages and disadvantages would be. Solution 1: Advantage: Disadvantage: Solution 2: Advantage: Disadvantage:
Also this question: Give an evaluation (give your opinion) of the advantages and disadvantages of the New Deal. What do you think of the New Deal, and it’s advantages and disadvantages?
An unexamined assumption here is that the New Deal actually was a solution to the depression. There are serious historians who believe that the New Deal turned what would have been an ordinary and short-lived recession into the Great Depression. That is, it is entirely possible that the New Deal caused the "Great" part of the Great Depression. In which case, the most obvious improvement would be simply to not have the New Deal.
@dumbkids ?
did you try looking it up on Google?
Many historians feel today that FDR's solutions were pretty ineffectual in stopping the spread of the depression. True or not, this seems to lead to some upset in the popular thinking about FDR and his efforts to stop the Great Depression. One reason his efforts did not have much effect was the lack of cooperation from foreign governments to help their own economies. The world governments were headed toward dictatorships and this meant it was difficult to work with those powers to encourage economic growth. Most historians believe today that FDR was doing OK and the New Deal might have eventually worked, but WWII spending simply accelerated the recovery and took up all the available unemployed. The war ended the depression in larger terms. The next economic recession was in 1957-58.
