\[7k - 8 +2(k+12)=52\]\[ \implies -60 + 7 k + 2 (12 + k)=0 \implies k=4\]
so you get 60 by adding 8 and 52

but my math teacher told me to do whats in the parentheses first??
That's not necessary, unless you are mixing parentheses and non-parentheses up up you can do pretty much what you like :)
