How do you find the velocity of an object on top of a loop?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you know the velocity in the bottom of the loop, then \[ \frac{1}{2}m{v_b}^2 = \frac{1}{2}m{v_t}^2 + mg2r \] rearranging the term, we get \[ v_t = \left( {v_b}^2 - 4gr \right)^{\frac{1}{2}} \]
