The trick is to break the words down into equations. (and then solve the equations). 

The hard part about this problem is that Juan and Julio have the SAME FIRST NAME!!!

The word "Has" is basically the equal sign. 

Juan = $8 less than Todd.

"$8 less than Todd" means "Take whatever Todd has and subtract $8."

Juan = T - 8

And now we just replace "Juan" with J

J = T - 8
