Why are stage directions important in order to understanding a play?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Stage directions, written in italics to distinguish them from dialogue, are the playwright's "instructions" to the actors, telling them such things as how and where to move, what vocal inflections or facial expressions to use, etc. Depending on the stage directions given, the same dialogue can have totally different meanings. Therefore, stage directions are critical to understanding the true meaning of a play.
