Quick question: What is the most common product formed when potassium is exposed to air?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would it be K2O ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

KOH potassium is highly higroscopic and air humidity is enough for it to form KOH

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm.....That is probably the correct answer if I was taking an advance chemistry class hah , but the options I have are a. K2O b.K2O2 c.KO2 d.K2O3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you have to choose from those answers choose: a. K2O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See that is what I thought, but the correct answer is KO2.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow you got me messed up now, ill take further look in my books and get back to you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

found it in my inorganic chemistry book and it goes like this: combustion of K with limited amount of air gives K2O2 potassium peroxide, but with sufficient amount of air potassium combusts giving KO2 potassium superoxide, this reaction goes easily if potassium is cut in thin leaves or grinded in fine powder. it also reacts with humidity from air giving potassium hydroxide KOH... so there you have it, hope i translated it fair enough

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you! yes that makes sense..... :D thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not a problem, i also learned something :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMG I JUST REALIZED! YOUR NAME AND PICTURE! I LOVE REDWARF!!! i have watched it since i was like in 3rd Grade and I still watch some shows today, i have bascially seen every episode.
