Help please?! Ping is deciding what to choose for dinner from a menu. He can choose 1 of 3 pasta meals, 1 of 7 chicken meals, or 1 of 3 fish meals. How many ways can Ping choose a dinner meal? a. 3 b. 13 c. 30 d. 63 Am I supposed to multiply to get the answer? Or add? I'm a bit lost!!

Parth (parthkohli):

7c1 * 3c1 * 3c1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What does the c mean??

Parth (parthkohli):

It means "combination"

Parth (parthkohli):

In general, nCr = \(\Large \color{Black}{\Rightarrow {n! \over (n -r)! \times r!} }\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And so if I am multiplying, does that mean the answer is d. 63 then?? oh my gosh.. haha thanks for clearing that up! hahaa so would that mean the answer is just 63 since 7 x 3=21 x 3=63?

Parth (parthkohli):

Hmm I see that you are correct! ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So everytime I get an equation like that, I just multiply??

Parth (parthkohli):

Exactly!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome! Thank you so much @ParthKohli :) now I understand how to do that.. i think! teehee :) thanks!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

not sure why you're using combinations when you're simply multiplying 3, 7 and 3 to get 63

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

this is basically the counting principle in action

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha hi @jim_thompson5910 thanks for coming! but the answer is 63 (answer d) anyways yes?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, the answer is 63

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks! :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you can draw a tree (if you want) to confirm

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but I don't recommend it as you'll have a lot of branches

Parth (parthkohli):

Hmm....but tree would be very long

Parth (parthkohli):

Yes exactly
