Did the vikings ever go to the USA?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is believed that the Vikings reached Newfoundland around the year 1000 CE. . So yes, the vikings did go to the US.

OpenStudy (morganb):

The vikings went to the continent, but at the time the USA did not exist. So, technically, no.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@morganb That is true but you have to remember that the land that they reached is now present day known as the US. It's the same land, just different name. So technically, yes they did go to the US. ;)

OpenStudy (morganb):

But it wasn't the US at the time, they did visit America, but not the US

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@morganb America is the US and he was asking if they visit the US, so the answer is still yes, they did indeed visit the US. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@morganb And it really doesn't matter if it wasn't called the US at the time, it' still the same land, just different name.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is known that the Vikings reached what is now Canada. There is some evidence that they also reached the Chesapeake Bay area - which is the US now, I think - but it's not certain.
