An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word. The US is an abbreviation for the United States. The UK is an abbreviation for the United Kingdom. I guess you could say the Periodic Table uses abbreviations too. The symbols for chemical elements are a shortened form and easier to remember. The latin symbol for Iron is Fe. The latin symbol for Silver is Ag.
