Would it be difficult to add a subscribe/unsubscribe button next to a user's question? - I'm sure a lot of users here would like the opportunity to opt out of a discussion that they have previously commented on (perhaps the question has been resolved but there is still ongoing chatter), and in doing so avoid those frequent notifications. Also, there are many questions that I don't know the answer to, but I would like to follow the thread to see other people's answers. I think these two features would be relatively simple to implement and be extremely useful to everyone.

Yeah, more control of what notifications you get would generally be a good thing. Some options I'd like to see:
Let me subscribe to a list of people so that I see all of their questions.
Let me subscribe to questions without replying to them.
Let me unsubscribe from specific questions.

Hmmmm I think I like this idea. Though it might be a lot of effort into something that may cause more confusion or problems. 
I think the best idea is the dropping out a question once it has been resolved.

Define “difficult” ;) It is a certain amount of work, and at the moment we haven't made that a priority. We do like the idea, so it's sitting on our to-do list (and has been for some time).
