Mr. Lemons earns $1000 for every used car he sells and $3000 for every new car he sells. How much would he make if he sold "x" used cars and "y" new cars?

OK, so "x" represents the number of used cars he sells, and he sells each for $1000. You just multiply the number of cars he sells by the price. Do the same for the new cars. "y" new cars for $3000 each. So 1000x is what he makes for all the used cars he sells and 3000y is what he makes for all the new cars. Add these together and you get his total. 1000x + 3000y
