Each child ticket for a ride costs $2, while each adult ticket costs $6. If the ride collected a total of $148, and 38 tickets were sold, how many of each type of ticket was sold? 20 children and 18 adults 19 children and 19 adults 14 children and 20 adults 148 adults and 38 children

let the number of child ticket be x. so number of adult ticket=38-x so x*2 + (38-x)*6 = 148 solve for x that will give you no of child tickets sold.
because 20 times 2 is 40 and 18 times 6 is 108 so you add them and get 148
