The Crusades were launched in the pursuit of religious freedom and money. When crusaders found new lands, they went back home with exaggerated stories about wealth and the people and creatures there. This created an urge for others to investigate the New World. Also, this led to an increased desire for trade routes to these lands, especially in Spain: when Christopher Columbus stumbled upon the Americas, he was in search of a trade route to the West Indies.
