How should we punctuate a sequence of examples? For example: "People starve to death (?) fight for their freedoms (?) strive for better lives (?) etc."

People starve to death, fight for their freedoms, strive for better lives, and etc. I believe this is the right punctuation because it is a series of things listed.

First of all, unless you use a complete sentence leading up to it, a colon should not precede a list. However, if you DO use a complete sentence, you would separate the listed items with commas. By the way, "For example" is a fragment.
