solve Absolute value(inequality) |-5x-8| <27

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

solve for x when -5x - 8 < 27 AND -5x - 8 > -27

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why does 27 turn negative?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

it's actually a technique... when |a+ bx| > c then you solve for x when a + bx > c and a + bx < -c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah, doesn't the 5 and 8 turn positive?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

from the solution i posted...no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it never turns positive

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

well not never...for example the second equation -5x - 8 > -27 if i multiply everything by -1 i'll get 5x + 8 < 27

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

you can make it positive but the sign will change
