Why could it be misleading for an owner of a salon to boast to her friends that the MEAN salary at the salon is ,$49,400

Well, one of the possibilities that come to my mind is that there could be some values which would be outliers (Remember outliers? - they're those numbers which are too large or small, when compared with data - they exaggerate the real mean, etc. of the data set.). In this case, if you had an outlier, then, when you took the average (remember - mean is the same thing as average), it would definitely affect the salary of the salon owner.
