A frame story can also be called a frame tale--it is a literary device that will sometimes serve as a companion piece for a story, which is in another story. There will be an introduction or a narrative present, or at least in some part of the tale, for the purpose of setting the stage. It could be either for a more emphasized second narrator or for a set of shorter stories. The frame story will end off leading the reader from the first story and into another, smaller one, or at least several ones within that one. Now the main goal of a frame story or frame tale is as a conceit, which can otherwise disparate tales. It has mostly replaced, in more modern literacy, by the short story anthology or the collection absent of any authorial conceit. The frame narrative, or the story must act primarily on the occasion for telling other stories. So you can say, that it's like the main character of that story, telling the story themselves (in the beginning and then in the end) of the story. "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" is an example of a story within a story- that being said, it consists of a story that is within another story. It has a frame story (at the beginning and at the end) and in the inner story. It starts off as a reporter, who is being sent to interview a person--leading off to where the person tells the story of the frog to the reporter. Hope that helps! n_n
