the length of the small triangle is (5/12) of the big (enclosing) triangle so its area is (5/12)^2 times the area of the big triangle if we subtract off the area of the small triangle we get the area of the trapezoid so the area of the trapezoid is 40 - (25/144)*40 = 40*119/144 = 33 1/18
