This would be feudalism. This is a system of obligations that bound lords and their subjects in Europe during the Middle Ages. Theoretically, the King owned all, or at least most of the land and he then would give it to his leading nobles, in gratitude for their military services or for their loyalty. These nobles held land that the peasants or the serfs, were allowed to farm on, in return for their peasants' labor and their proportion produced. Now under feudalism, people were born with a permanent position in the society, until they die of course.
