OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the linear equation and non linear equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A linear equation makes a LINE when graphed and can be put in the form y=mx+b (or is a vertical line). A non-linear function is not a line, and it cannot be put into that form.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

linear if exponent on the independent variable (usually x) =1; non-linear otherwise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A linear also only has the highest power ^1, yep just as @CliffSedge stated.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it has to be like y=3x+2, y=5x+10 not y=5x^2+3 and so on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exponent could also be 0 (constant function).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a linear equation is of degree 1.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

as long as you dont see any exponents...it is a linear equation

OpenStudy (mathmagician):

Linear eguation is any equation of form \[a _{0}+a _{1}x _{1}+...+a _{n}x _{n}=0\]. All equations, that does not statisfy this condition, is nonlinear.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ummmm \[y = \frac{1}{x}\] doesn't have an exponent.... hehehe y = sin(x) doesn't have an exponent...
