So, I know we've brought this up before, can we seriously not do anything about the multiple account users?

Tonight a long-time user got banned because she had multiple accounts but there were others with multiple accounts on as well, I think we either need to make it a rule and stick with it or let everyone do it.

In general we don't discuss suspension in public as it only create unnecessary negativity and misunderstanding. For thisreason we urge our users to use our dedicated email address abuse@openstudy.com

But in this case I really appreciate @rebeccaskell94 for bringing up this issue here. I will try to clarify to this issue in detail.

Let’s, start with what our code of conduct says about sock-puppets:

“Don't game the system! Keep medals and achievements valuable, so please avoid:
Creating multiple accounts, or colluding with friends to gain unearned medals or achievements.”

Although it seems to me that creating multiple accounts is proscribed but as a general idea we do allow multiple account as long the user is not using it game our system.

Coming back to the issue in hand, the user @samjordon @pippa @simplyyours @rld613. is a not a general case. I think most the non-moderators are not aware of the fact that she was ip banned and even subnet banned due to her perverse actions in our site. Although of this predates my moderation period I was told by one of the administrator that the only reason she is still here because we somehow over sighted to deactivate the account “samjordon”. To the best of my knowledge she was instructed not to use any sock-puppet other than that “samjordon”. Nevertheless we keep a close eye on these users. This is why the sock-puppet ”qtpi” was suspended.

Although the suspension message clearly states that if she had any query or complain regarding the suspension issued she is encouraged to use our email (abuse@openstudy.com) yet (quite unfortunately), she resorted to slander and make invidious accusation (in chat), which is clearly uncalled and it created negativity and unnecessary misunderstanding among our members. Accordingly a warning is issued asking her to refrain from doing it and requesting her just to use our email address instead.

Unfortunately , she made it clear that she is not going to listen and started doing the same thing again and again. Hence, her account “samjorden” is temporarily suspended. All other suspension were issued as she was evading the initial temporary suspension.

Finally, I would like to apologize to everyone for the unnecessary misunderstanding and negativity that resulted due to this fuss.

So, I'll chime in here as well.

As Fool pointed out, Pippa/samjordan isn't the primary case we see with multiple accounts.
Her accounts are the result of bans, IP bans, and even subnet bans (bans against an entire block of IP addresses). Most people have alternate accounts for goofing off (case in point @Chuck_Norris). Our current policy is not to act against this, unless @cshalvey changed it and I missed the memo. IMHO, as long as it doesn't impact the SmartScore distribution - I don't really mind some people having alternate accounts for goofing off.

Accounts that are used to evade suspensions are regularly acted against. The samjordan account being allowed to exist was a fluke. It escaped my notice for awhile and she wasn't causing trouble, so I left her alone. On the flip side of that coin, we don't usually give much slack to users that we've been required to ban before if they do start misbehaving again.
