1.) It was in effort to keep the refugees, from their attempts to leave East Berlin. The communist government of East Germany began to build the Berlin Wall, so that they can divide the East and West of Berlin. Due to the construction of this wall, it caused a short-term crisis in the U.S.-Soviet bloc reactions. Now the wall itself became the symbolization of the Cold War. 2.) Detente in french means "relaxation". Now during the Cold War a whole lot of tension rose and fell on and off. The period of relaxation began in the early 1970s and it then became know a Detente--"release of tension".
