When I'm typing a backslash, I'm getting a hash symbol. When I type a hash, I get the pounds symbol. Not sure what is happening.

Sounds like you're using a UK keyboard layout. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout Try pressing Ctrl + Shift to change the layout.
