What argument for maintaining slavery was most important in the minds of Southerners? Answer Using slaves was a way of life for Southerners, and they were not willing to change that lifestyle. Plantations depended on slave labor, and owners felt the plantations would fail without it. Southerners knew if slaves weren't counted in their population, the North would gain control of Congress. Without slaves, plantation owners would be forced to work their own fields, and they were not skilled in that area.
