The other important point being that they (the soldiers) knew their general messed up, but they had to follow orders, so they knew it was a terrible plan, but went to get killed anyway.

The meaning of the poem was that six-hundred men charged into battle against a superior force and were killed. The math doesn't much matter here except for 600-600=0.
