In a seventh grade class 14 out of 30 students are boys In simplest terms what is the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls in this grade?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

How many girls are there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know.. I don't even understand the question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if there are 14 boys there are 30-14 girls. The ratio is number of boys : number of girls

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. It just doesn't make sense.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Do you know what a ratio is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

A ratio is a comparison of 2 quantities using a fraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, there are 14 boys and 16 girls that makes 30 kids in total so the ratio is 14:16 this can be simplified to 7:8 by dividing each number by two. answer is 7:8

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Let's say you have $10 and I have $5 The ratio of your money to mine is the fraction 10/5 or reduced to lowest terms it is 2 to 1. On the other hand, the ratio of my money to yours is 5 to 10 or in reduced form 1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh so if you reduced it to the lowest term it would be 7:8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a ratio is similar to a fraction i.e. 3/4 can be written as 3:4 i.e. three parts of one thing to fours parts of another. Think of it like mixing paint 3parts green 4 parts orange to make er not nice paint lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thats correct you should always simplify if you can

Okay thank you
