In Langston Hughes's "Theme for English B," where and when the speaker lives makes the assignment humorous, because asking the speaker to write about himself is an exercise in absurdity. meaningless, because the speaker's teacher is a bigot who will not even bother to read his piece. simple, because the speaker is intelligent enough to attend Columbia University, a prestigious school near Harlem. difficult, because these things make the speaker question what is true about his own identity.
I believe the answer is "difficult, because these things make the speaker question what is true about his own identity.". If you read the poem, Mr. Hughes talks about his race, and distinctions around him while on his way back towards Harlem. He also goes so far to ask if the reader would be affected if this was writen a a black guy...
