Amy Tan came from an immigrant family, so her mother's English was not fluent or grammatically correct. Sometimes, one could understand her mother's meaning but other times her mother's English came out twisted and demonstrated creative uses of vocabulary. Being schooled in the U.S., Amy's English was proper.
