x^2+x-6 plz help!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Find two numbers that multiply to -6 and add to 1 at the same time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 and 3?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which one is negative?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

close, it's 2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

since 3*(-2) = -6 and 3+(-2) = 1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So because the two numbers are 3 and -2, this means that x^2+x-6 factors to (x+3)(x-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oo thank you!!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but the answer is (x+3)(x-2)?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes it is

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

did you have a question about it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oo ok no i got it thnx

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
