OpenStudy (kainui):

What does ace- mean in acetylene, acetic, etc...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is name for hydrocarbon with two carbon atoms, so acetylene is C2H2, acetic acid is CH3COOH....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like acet you have formic which is the same as acetic but with one carbon atom, example: formic acid HCOOH etc.

OpenStudy (kainui):

So acet and eth are the same along with form and meth?

OpenStudy (kainui):

Acetone has 3 carbon in it now that I think of it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but two carbons to functional group, such you can have ex. acetoacetic acid (diacetic acid) where you have keto acid: |dw:1338962610050:dw| but there are still two carbons that come till functional group..
