14x-(x^2 +8x)= find the difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First, you must get rid of the parenthesis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is a bit tricky, because you have to see that there is really a minus 1 being multiplied by the parenthesis like this : \[14x + (-1)(x^2+8x)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Distribute the (-1) to get rid of the parenthesis and you have \[14x-x^2-8x\]

Now, you can add like terms (all the terms with x to the power of 1 can be added to all of the other terms with x to the power of 1), so the final answer is: \[6x-x^2\]

I will clarify any questions
