I have a new idea!! So, after being cussed out in music group yet again, I thought of it! What if a repeat offender (i.e. someone who has been banned or suspended) is only allowed to have one account after say, 3-5 times of a suspension or banning?
Whether any user should be allowed to have duplicate accounts is open to debate. I agree that rescinding the duplicate account privileges of users who have been through a few rounds of suspension would make moderating the site easier - but it is not so easy to tell whether multiple accounts coming out of the same IP address all belong to the same person, or whether they belong to different family members in the same household or different students at the same school. I think it would have to be an all or none decision - disable duplicate accounts for all users or disable duplicate accounts for no users. And I think the current policy of manually blocking IP addresses after people go through a few quick rounds of suspend/duplicate account is the fairest system going, if not the least effort on behalf of the mods. Great discussion point though - and not all the mods share my opinion.
Thanks for the reply @blues. I understand this being a hard point considering people are not islands and there are always others to take into consideration, such as family members and classmates.
As a point of interest, it is usually quite clear when one user is evading suspension with multiple accounts. The new account come within hours (usually seconds) of the suspension. It might be worth while to have some automatic way of nixing those. Or a "merge account" option like the moderators on Stack Exchange...
Oh yeah, it was an old user. He/she hates be for getting them banned. I'm not sure which old user it was or how I got them banned but, oh well. In my group it is also pretty easy because new users don't find it, so if a red or orange level user comes on and starts trolling I remove them from our presence ;D. I love your idea though of the automatic nixing...it would be quite swell.
@rebeccaskell94 music is in the first five subjects in the "Find More Subjects" for guests/new users
