Explain why humans are interested in monitoring tides? What impact do tides have on human life?

I've heard that the earliest of our species, that lived near the African coast 100-200 thousand years ago hunted for clams ... during low tide when they were above sea level. For them knowing the tides meant survival. I suppose monitoring the tides, would be important for any sea related activities ... like fishing, shipping/trade
