OpenStudy (anonymous):

help please iven f(x) = –5x + 1, what is f(–2)?

Parth (parthkohli):

If you input a number \(x\), you get negative five times x and one added. similarly, when you input -2, you'll get negative five times -2 and one added. In other words. \( \color{Black}{\Rightarrow f(x) = -5x + 1 \Longrightarrow f(-2) = -5(-2) + 1}\)

Parth (parthkohli):

Can you solve it now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe but im not sure

OpenStudy (phi):

what is -5 times -2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10

OpenStudy (phi):

now add 1 you just figured out -5*-2 +1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OHHHH ok thankyou i get it now

OpenStudy (phi):

so f(x) = –5x + 1 is just short hand for -5 * x +1 you replace x with a number f(3) is short hand for replace x with 3. then do the arithmetic

OpenStudy (phi):

f(-2) means replace x with -2, so you get -5*-2+1 which simplifies to 11
