What was the use of the Berlin Airlift?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The massive airlift was the largest humanitarian operation ever undertaken by the air force. The more than 2.3 million tons of supplies flown into the city over approximately 10 months dwarf all future operations.

Hope this helps ;)

To add to the answer above, the reason why it was done was because the Soviets had closed down all land access to West Berlin in what has become known as the Berlin Blockade. Berlin, as a city, was located in East Germany which the Soviets controlled. But the city was divided into East and West like the country was after WW2. West Berlin was run by the Allies (like the United States and United Kingdom) while the East part of the city was run by the Soviets who we were now on icy terms with. At one point, the Soviets decided to flex their muscle and isolate West Berlin. The West, in turn, beat the blockade using the airlift. Eventually, the Soviets backed down and allowed transports to come back through East Germany once more to supply West Berlin.
