The figure below shows line AB parallel to line CD. Segment EF is parallel to segment GH. What is the value of x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

explain how can i solve this..please! i truly appreciate it! ;)

OpenStudy (btaylor):

because of the parallel lines, you can say that the two angles are alternate exterior angles. So 2x+10=x+40. Solve for x, and you get x = 30.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you break it down, so i can see how you got to 30? thanx so much! you are awesome!

OpenStudy (btaylor):

which part? Proving they are equal, or solving for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solving for x

OpenStudy (btaylor):

ok, you have 2x+10=x+40 subtract x from both sides, and you get x+10=40 now subtract 10 from both sides, and you get x = 30. Got it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok!! thank you!! now i get it! so my recent question take a look at it..i got 120 but i wanna make sure
