Can anyone help me with college algebra?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hello

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am trying to find free tutoring help. Would you be willing to help me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have a specific question? Because whatever question you need help with this site is practically designed for that. So post away and ask for explanation when you don't understand. But if you have a question and I am able to help you I will.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I am working on a problem currently x(x-8)+12=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have broken it down to x^2-8x+12=0 and I know I need to use the quad. formula which is x=-b +- square root of b^2 -4ac divided by 2a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or you can factor it does the instructions say to solve using the quadratic formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No bt ut

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x-2)(x-6)=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No but I don't know how to factor it I suppose

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can use various methods.. the trial and error or you can multiply the coefficient of the first term by the constant in the last term which is 1*-12 which is -12 and look for two factors of 12 (1,2,3,4,6,12) that give you -8 and looks like our factors are -2 and -6.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thus x^2-2x-6x+12=0 x(x-2)-6(x-2)=0 (x-6)(x-2)=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wow thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are surely welcome!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer is then 2,6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes :). x=-2 and x=6.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problemo! If you have any other questions you can close this one and ask it in the question window at the top because posting multiple questions in one window tends to slow down your computer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One other question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why are you multiplying one by -12 and not 12
