well looking at the kite... adjacent sides are equal

then the two lower sides are equal

2x + 5 = x + 12

solve the equation for x

subtract x from both sides

x + 5 = 12

subtract 5 from both sides

then x = 7

you will need this answer for the upper adjacent sides where

y - 4 = x+ 5 given x = 7

you have

y - 4 = 7 + 5

y - 4 = 12

y = 16
