Why is the bell mare important in the buckaroo’s job? The cattle hear the bell and move toward the ranch. Only one horse can lead the team and the bell identifies the leader. The bell mare wears a bell that the other horses will follow and that keeps the horses together. The cattle are afraid of the bell and will stay close to the ranch.
