Select the term that describes the linear portion in this quadratic equation. 7x2 - 12x + 16 = 0 -12x 7x2 16

OpenStudy (btaylor):

The question is basically asking this: Which term, when graphed, would make a line? (Hint: it is the term with degree 1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the linear one has an exponent of 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok what do they mean by degree...the one with the power

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the degree refers to the exponent. notice your polynomial can be written equivalently as : \(\large 7x^2-12x^1+16x^0 \)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the linear term is the one with exponent 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I get it soo the answer would be....7x^2 and -12x^1

OpenStudy (btaylor):

no, 7x^2 doesn't have an exponent of 1. If you graphed it, it would be a parabola, not a line.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok
