Zachary plotted points P, X, and Y to represent the vertices of a triangle as shown in the figure below.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What should Zachary do to make triangle PXY an obtuse scalene triangle? Move X to the left of segment LM on the arc. Move X to the left of segment LM beyond the arc. Move X to the right of segment LM beyond the arc. Move X to the point of intersection of segment LM and the arc.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

It's not choice A "Move X to the left of segment LM on the arc.." because this would make it an isosceles triangle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

It's not choice C "Move X to the right of segment LM beyond the arc." because this would make an acute triangle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and it's not choice D "Move X to the point of intersection of segment LM and the arc." because this would again make it an isosceles triangle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so by the process of elimination, it's choice B

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and it turns out that if you draw the triangle following these steps, you'll actually get an obtuse scalene triangle

thanks :D @jim_thompson5910
