Barium ions are highly poisonous when swallowed. Eating or drinking barium compounds that dissolve in water may cause difficulties in breathing, swelling of the brain, and other side effects when barium ions enter into the bloodstream of a person. A person who accidentally swallows barium chloride solution would be given sodium sulfate solution as an antidote. Explain why it can act as an antidote.
